Bordeaux
Overview
The Bordeaux region, which stretches about 80 kilometers around the city of Bordeaux is the largest quality wine producing region in France and in the world. One third of French quality wines come from Bordeaux.
Bordeaux is composed of 57 appellations, has about 7 000 château wine producers, and 13 000 harvesters. The great diversity of wines from Bordeaux also suggests a wide range of soils, from gravel and sand to clay and limestone.
Bordeaux is located near the Atlantic coast in the South-West of France. The wine region of Bordeaux covers the administrative department of the Gironde (also a river), in the Aquitaine region.
Bordeaux wines take their name from the main town in the region. But you will not find vineyards in the city itself. The vineyards begin just outside the city of Bordeaux, along the three rivers Gironde, Garonne, and Dordogne. This are offers the ideal circumstances for the cultivation of grapes and the elaboration of wine.
The climate in Bordeaux is temperated, with a short winter and high humidity levels due to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean.
Most grapes grown in the Bordeaux region are for red wine. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes provide the force and tannin necessary to stabilize the quality of the wines.
Merlot brings the softness and flexibility, and is the most planted grape in Bordeaux.
It is grown in more than 50% of Bordeaux vineyards.
The white wines are mainly developed with Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes, sometimes with Muscadelle.
