How to store your wine properly

Here are some guidelines on how to store a good wine

You've always heard: a wine improves with age. Even though the aromas of most wines are great already when young, the bottles still need to be stored under good conditions to make the wine even better! Does this mean that in the absence of a genuine natural cave, you can not keep good bottles at home? Do not worry, your wines can still flourish at home if you follow a few basic principles.



Keep your bottles in a place that offer the following conditions:



  -- Temperature between 10 and 15 degrees celsius (ideally 12 ° C). Warning: Avoid the refrigerator!



  -- A constant temperature: wines will feel even small shiftings!



  -- Ventilated, but not outdoors. 



  -- Relatively dark, sunlight or artificial light means risk of oxidation.



  -- High humidity, between 60% - 95% of air humidity. If the air is too dry, the caps/corks may start to leak and let the air. Why not equip yourself with a small hydrometer to avoid unpleasant surprises?



  -- Avoid strong odours: paintings, household products, perfumes, gasoline but also naturals like vegetables (onions, potatoes…) are harmful to the aroma of wine. These odors can penetrate the corks!



  -- Avoid vibrations: do not place near the engine of the refrigerator or washing machine for example.





Other advice: lay your bottles down horizontally! The bottom of a closet can do the job, just as well as some wooden boxes (but not cardboard!) If you wish, you can easily purchase a simple wine containment system (wood, metal, plastic), both new and used ones are for sale both on the internet and in furniture stores. 

It is customary to place red wines above bottles of white.


If you already have dozens of bottles, including some great wines, consider to invest in a real home wine cave system. These units include an investment package (450 € over 4500 €), but the promotions are common and then you avoid any unpleasant surprises. Be alert, and an investment can pay off in the long term!
